Dedicating her life's work toward defeating heart disease, Joe Ann Batcheller is the first and only female chairman of the Miami Heart Research Institute/Florida Heart Research Foundation, an independent nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization with the mission to stop heart disease through research, education, and prevention. Since 1944, the organization has been an international leader in research and is now statewide in its education and prevention programs. To better raise awareness, the organization has a program to switch license plates to ones that help bring awareness to heart disease. Eighty percent of the funds raised from the "Stop Heart Disease" license plates are legislatively mandated to support programs throughout Florida. Twenty-five dollars of the registration fees from every plate sold and renewed will go to the Florida Heart Research Foundation, where it will be utilized in the effort to stop heart disease.
Prior to her current role, Mrs. Batcheller began her tenure at the Miami Heart Institute on the Board of Directors from 1973 to 1993, during which time she also served as the executive vice president and president. From 1993 to 2018, she held the position of executive vice president of Miami Heart Research Institute/Florida Heart Research Foundation and also served on the Board of Directors. She is now the chairman of both organizations and she is the first and only woman to hold both positions.
Mrs. Batcheller has also served as the chairwoman of Superior Plant Foods, Inc. in Lakeland, Florida from 1958 to 1960, and a secretary on the board of directors for Bluegrass Plant Foods, Inc. in Cynthiana, Kentucky from 1958 to 1972. Additionally, she was the vice president on the board of directors for Pensacola Petroleum Company, Inc. in Miami for four years, as well as Top Power Stations, and a director of Pan American Bank in Miami (Bank of America).
In preparation for her career, Mrs. Batcheller pursued an education at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, earning an Associate of Arts in 1952. She continued her studies with a Bachelor of Arts from the University.
Using what she learned from academia, Mrs. Batcheller exceeded all expectations by contributing to the Miami community as a member on the advisory board for the Convent of Sacred Heart and the board of directors of the American Heart Association.
Furthermore, she was involved with the Parents' Advisory Board at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina from 1979 to 1983, and was the first and only female president of the Surf Club of Miami Beach.
Mrs. Batcheller is also a recipient of the coveted Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.
