From a young age, Dr. Kramer harbored a curiosity about chess, which he would often play at school. His father subsequently discovered his interest and decided to train him formally. During his high school years, Dr. Kramer began entering and winning in local competitions.
After accruing several local titles, Dr. Kramer competed in a speed championship in Detroit, which he won. As a result, he was invited to compete on the Olympic team in the 1950 Chess Olympiad in Dubrovnik, Croatia. As an accomplished chess player, Dr. Kramer garnered the Manhattan Chess Club Championship, the Chess Championship at the New York State Tournament in 1945 and the New Jersey Chess Championship on two occasions.
Most notably, Dr. Kramer indirectly participated in the World Chess Championship in 1948, where Samuel Reshevsky was competing for the world title. Prior to the tournament, he met with Reshevsky, who was familiar with Dr. Kramer's reputation in the chess community and respected his judgment, and demonstrated four obscure opening maneuvers, as well as possible counter-strategies for these moves. Later, during the tournament, Reshevsky would employ each of the four unorthodox openings that Dr. Kramer had shown him in his matches, leading to four lengthy draws with his Russian opponents, and resulting in some truly interesting games. After his chess career, Dr. Kramer earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from Queens College, a part of the City University of New York system, as well as a Master of Science in physical chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Kramer later worked as a senior research associate for Exxon Research and Engineering Company for several years, a tenure in which he developed more than 20 patents in chemistry. As a respected voice in the field of science, he has written more than 50 articles for scholarly publications such as the Journal of the American Chemical Society. In order to remain aware of developments in his areas of expertise, Dr. Kramer maintains his affiliation with the American Chemical Society, the United States Chess Federation, B'nai B'rith International and Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Honor Society.
