After a long, successful career in healthcare administration that spanned 40 years, Mr. Weiss retired as the president of Weiss Consulting Associates in 2015. His business was notably a certified service-disabled veteran-owned small business through the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and was licensed in both South Carolina and Florida. Mr. Weiss' expertise spans years of leadership skills in various sectors of the industry as well as several prominent and rewarding positions.
Mr. Weiss' extensive background included a tenure with the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations as a surveyor, team leader and health care consultant from 1994 to 2007. He also served as the chief executive officer for Lewis Gale Psychiatric Center in Salem, Virginia and the Hospital Corporation of America, a healthcare administrator for the Army Medical Department and a patient safety and risk management administrator at the Naval Hospital in Beaufort, South Carolina, with which he was instrumental in two successful Joint Commission surveys. Additionally, Mr. Weiss has consulted on behalf of the Naval Health Clinic Lemoore, California and the Naval Health Clinic Charleston.
Besides his full-time commitments, Mr. Weiss successfully founded the Good Neighbor Free Medical Clinic in Beaufort in 2007. Raising approximately $250,000 for the clinic, he was able to help save many lives, become an advocate for children, and touch many lives in the process through his work. Playing an integral role in the community for decades, Mr. Weiss was likewise appointed as the chairman of the United Way of Roanoke Valley and the Douglas County United Way campaign.
Mr. Weiss was also a member of the steering committee for the Coalition for Equitable Health Insurance in Atlanta. He was further selected as a member and secretary of the Emergency Medical Services Council in both Augusta and Columbus, Georgia. Furthermore, he was recruited as the director of the Emergency Medical Technician course in Columbus.
Mr. Weiss received an appointment to study in the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in general science in 1962. During his 20 years in the U.S. Army, he advanced from lieutenant to lieutenant colonel between 1962 and 1982. Mr. Weiss additionally completed tours in Germany, Vietnam, the Republic of Panama and Brooklyn, New York.
Mr. Weiss obtained a master's degree (MHA) in health administration in management and finance, with honors, at Baylor University in 1977. He subsequently completed a residency in health administration at the U.S. Military Academy Community Hospital at West Point. Also, Mr. Weiss completed his studies at Oklahoma University with a Master's Degree in Business Administration (MBA) is also certified as a mental health administrator through the American College of Healthcare Executives.
A life fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (LFACHE), Mr. Weiss was very involved as a board member and first secretary-treasurer of its South Carolina chapter. He was also recognized by the American College of Healthcare Executives for his leadership and skills with a Service Award in 2009 and a Distinguished Service Award in 2012. Other professional memberships that have made an impact on Mr. Weiss' career include the Association of Mental Health Administrators, the Florida League of Hospitals, the Georgia Hospital Association, the National Association of Psychiatric Health Systems, and the Upsilon Phi Delta National Honor Society.
For his military contributions, Mr. Weiss was decorated with a Bronze Star, along with other awards. He also received two Top Performance of the Year Awards during his career at HCA Psychiatric Company in 1984 and 1985. A celebrated Marquis listee, Mr. Weiss has been featured in the 25th edition of Who's Who in Finance and Industry, the 50th edition of Who's Who in America and the 21st through 23rd editions of Who's Who in the South and Southwest.
