COLUMBUS, GA, July 22, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Meg McGavran Murray, PhD, was inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Now retired, Dr. Murray taught English for almost 30 years at Mississippi State University and was honored by her students for her "outstanding" dedication to teaching. Prior to her tenure on the Starkville campus, she taught at the University of Massachusetts in Boston.
An award-winning author, Dr. Murray published "Margaret Fuller: Wandering Pilgrim" in 2008 (paperback edition, 2012), a book which has been honored by the American Library Association, having received the Organization's Choice Award for Outstanding Academic Title. "Wandering Pilgrim" tells the story of the agony experienced by the daughter of a tightly wound, demanding and even, at times, cynically cruel US legislator father. It gives insight into Margaret Fuller's Puritan ancestry, her difficult upbringing and adult life as a journalist, as well as her Romantic glory as a revolutionary during the 1848 European revolutions. Before "Wandering Pilgrim," Dr. Murray was the editor of the 1984 essay collection "Face to Face," with essays by (among others) feminists Florence Howe and Jessie Bernard as well as the public intellectual Christopher Lasch. She is presently working on a biography of New Deal pioneer, Clara Beyer, for which she had been given a year-long Mellon Grant from Radcliffe College at Harvard University. Murray, who joined the Mississippi State faculty in 1976, taught primarily the American Romantics. Amongst the many important positions she held during her campus tenure, she served as the first chairperson of women's studies, as well as the president of the Northeast Mississippi Graduate Association of Phi Beta Kappa and the MSU chapter of the Phi Kappa Phi, both international honor societies.
After receiving a bachelor's and a master's degree from the Ohio State University, Dr. Murray pursued and achieved a Doctor of Philosophy in English romantic and American literature at Cornell University where she was a student of the great English Romantics scholar M.H. Abrams and also of American Intellectual Historian Cushing Strout. Crediting her family's strong educational values to her success, Dr. Murray has observed that her father was notably a 1928 Harvard University graduate and that, at his unexpected death in 1961, he had gifted her a book by Isaac Watts titled "The Improvement of the Mind" (1852 ed.), which offered a philosophical perspective on life that she has since followed throughout her career.
