She subsequently worked as an IV therapist at Mercy Medical Center for 25 years before finding further success with the Nassau Health Care Corporation as a nursing supervisor for the last 27 years. In conjunction with her work, Ms. Sheppard dedicates her time and resources to others with Operation Get Ahead, the Memorial Presbyterian Church and the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs, Inc.
In order to remain aware of changes in the field, Ms. Sheppard is affiliated with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Central Nassau Club of the National Association of Business and Professional Women and the American Association of Retired Persons. For her professional excellence, she was presented with a Woman of Distinction Award for Community Service from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, which remains one of the highlights of her career.
