After earning a Bachelor of Science in computer science, with honors, from Butler University in 2003, Mr. Hawkins decided to leverage his education to bridge the gap between technology and law. Upon graduating, he enrolled in the Franklin Pierce Law Center for Intellectual Property at the University of New Hampshire and interned with the American Civil Liberties Union. In 2007, he graduated cum laude with a Doctor of Jurisprudence and began as an attorney for Paul Hastings. Likewise, he was admitted to practice law through the State Bar of California the following year.
Since 2010, Mr. Hawkins has been admitted to practice before the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. District Court for the Southern, Northern and Central Districts of California and the Eastern District of Texas. Additionally, he became a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) in the United States through the International Association of Privacy Professionals. Backed by his extensive expertise, he has excelled as an attorney with Perkins Coie, LLP, since 2010, where he specializes in patent litigation involving mobile and web-based user interface systems, operating systems, online search engines and more, as well as intellectual property law and ITC litigation. Over the years, he has represented such clients as Intel, Microsoft, Samsung, Google, Target, Starbucks and Costco.
In conjunction with his work in the legal field, Mr. Hawkins gives back to his community as a member of the San Diego Host Committee for Equality California, a federal club member for the Human Rights Campaign, and a leadership circle member and young professionals' council member with the San Diego LGBT Community Center.
For his outstanding body of work, Mr. Hawkins was named to the San Diego Daily Transcripts' Outstanding Young Attorneys in 2011 and 2012, won the Best of the Bar Award through the San Diego Business Journal in 2016, was honored in San Diego's Top 40 Under 40 in 2020, and has been named a Super Lawyer Rising Star in San Diego since 2015. Looking ahead, Mr. Hawkins intends to expand his practice and utilize his technological expertise in order to stay abreast of the legal issues that his clients might face.
