Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Beginning in 1989, Dr. Chattot established himself as a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at the University of California Davis. He is proud to have achieved emeritus status in 2013, and to have served as the endowed chair of his department between 2005 and 2010. Trained in computational fluid dynamics, Dr. Chattot has been conducting research in transonic flow, applied aircraft aerodynamics, wind turbine aerodynamic design and analysis, as well as aero-elastic simulation with the support of General Electric.
Born and raised in France and inspired by a grandfather who repaired and flew planes during the First World War, Dr. Chattot obtained a Bachelor of Science in engineering from Ecole Nationale Supérieure de L'Aéronautique in Paris in 1968. Upon coming to study in the United States, he earned a Doctor of Philosophy in mechanical engineering from the University of California Berkeley in 1971. Returning to France, he worked in the aerospace research and industry for nearly 20 years, where he performed research at the Office National d'Etudes et de Recherches Aérospatiales to develop the first 3D transonic code to help analyze their newly designed Airbus wing. During this time, he graduated with a Doctorat ès Sciences in mathematics from the Université Paris-Saclay in 1979. Leading numerical simulation groups at the Mécanique Aviation Traction and later at the Aerospatiale Systems Division, Dr. Chattot the rest of his career in the United States within the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at UC Davis, beginning in 1989.
In a career suffused with highlights, Dr. Chattot is most proud of all of the research he has undertaken on wind turbines, as well as his last three publications. Additionally, he has authored and co-authored two books published by Springer Verlag, titled "Computational Aerodynamics and Fluid Dynamics, an Introduction," and "Theoretical and Applied Aerodynamics, and Related Numerical Methods," the latter of which he published with Professor M.M. Hafez. He attributes his success to his inspirational professors, who continuously motivated him throughout his education. Looking toward the future, Dr. Chattot aims to continue inspiring students and making advancements in the field at UC Davis and other academic venues.
