Leading an impressive career in health care for more than 40 years, Ms. Lyddon specialized in nursing. Among her most notable roles, she was the director at Sierra Hospice, a subsidiary of Seneca Hospital, in Chester, California, from 1987 to 2007 and a staff, charge, drug room and emergency room nurse at several area hospitals between 1979 and 2007. Prior to retiring, Ms. Lyddon devoted nearly 15 years to the field as an end-of-life consultant until 2021, during which time she was instrumental in assisting clients and their loved ones through the death and dying process.
Ms. Lyddon's affinity for hospice care began while serving as a volunteer coordinator at her hospital when the previous coordinator had stepped down. In this capacity, she established the program's standards, and was responsible for growing the hospice program by providing excellent patient care and offering bereavement support groups, volunteer training and other services. Notably, Ms. Lyddon established Camp HUG, which stands for Hospice Understands Grief, as its director in 1997.
Well regarded as a children's bereavement camp, the facility provided children with a safe and nurturing environment that uses arts, crafts and other activities to help them better express their feelings. Subsequently, Camp Big HUG was implemented for adults six years later in 2003. After nearly 20 years in her volunteer position, Ms. Lyddon felt confident enough to begin her paid consulting role in end-of-life care.
Recognized as an expert in her field, Ms. Lyddon has contributed numerous articles to various professional journals, including in Bereavement Magazine. One of her poems was also included in Food for the Soul in 1996. Presently, she represents the Jada Bascom Foundation. As its board president since the original founding in 2009, Ms. Lyddon supports the nonprofit organization by promoting its mission of creating more awareness about the importance of bone marrow donation.
Ms. Lyddon was initially inspired to embark upon her profession due to caring for her husband's grandmother at home for four years without the benefit of hospice care. The ability to provide such necessary care for others as an adult has been incredibly gratifying. Ms. Lyddon studied at the University of California Irvine between 1969 and 1971. She subsequently enrolled at Golden West Junior College in Huntington Beach, California, where she acquired a licensed vocational nurse diploma in 1972. Years later, Ms. Lyddon returned to college, earning an Associate of Science in nursing at Los Angeles Valley College in 1982 and a Bachelor of Science in nursing at California State University in Dominguez Hills in 1997. She has been a registered nurse since 1982.
Ms. Lyddon has been heavily involved with the California Hospice and Palliative Care Association throughout her career. Apart from serving as a member, she is a former regional representative, board director, governance committee chairperson, volunteer task force chairperson and education task force member. She also served as a speaker at many of the association's annual meetings. In recognition of her efforts, the Association honored Ms. Lyddon with the Pierre Salmon Award in 1995.
