A highly accomplished statistician and educator, Dr. Gastwirth spent his first year after receiving his PhD as a research Associate at Stanford University. Subsequently, he was an Assistant and then Associate Professor at Johns Hopkins University. After a sabbatical at Harvard University, he served as Visiting Faculty Advisor on Statistical Policy at the Office of Management and Budget. In 1972 he joined the Statistics Department at George Washington University. As a professor of statistics and economics he has taught numerous students and served as mentor or advisor to many PhD students and younger faculty members. More than four decades later, he continues to be actively engaged in teaching and research.
From 1981-1985, he served as a one day a week consultant for the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs at the Office of Management and Budget. He received a Guggenheim grant to support his research on statistical problems arising in law and public policy for the 1985-86 academic year. He has been a visiting Professor or Scholar at Harvard University, MIT, and the University of California at Davis, London School of Economics, and the NCI and recently participated in a research program at the Newton Institute of Mathematical Sciences at Cambridge University.
Dr. Gastwirth has published the two volume book "Statistical Reasoning in Law and Public Policy" and Edited "Statistical Science in the Courtroom". He has written over 300 peer-reviewed article, which have appeared in the Annals of Statistics, Journal of the American Statistical Association, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society, Econometrica, Review of Economics and Statistics, Statistical Science, Annals of Human Genetics, Human Heredity, Jurimetrics and Statistics and Public Policy. He has served on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of the American Statistical Association, Biometrical Journal and Statistics and Public Policy. He was one of the founding Editors of Law, Probability and Risk and served as Editor-in-Chief from 2011-2015.
Dr. Gastwirth is a graduate of Yale University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in mathematics, summa cum laude, in 1958. Subsequently, he received a Master's degree at Princeton University and his PhD in Mathematical Statistics from Columbia University in 1963. He has been elected Fellow of the American Statistical Association, Institute of Mathematical Statistics and AAAS. The American Statistical Association awarded him Noether Award for his contributions to nonparametric statistics in 2012 and the Karl Peace Award for outstanding statistical contributions for the betterment of society in 2019.
