Concluding his prestigious career after 50 years in practice, Dr. Taber served as a renowned urological surgeon for several leading hospitals throughout Texas. He maintained his own private practice at the El Paso County Medical Society for over a decade between 1976 and 2019, shortly before retiring. Specializing in the treatment of kidney stones, Dr. Taber was notably one of the initial physicians to set up the first lithotripter in El Paso. A medical device that treats kidney stones, the lithotripter uses ultrasound shock waves to break up the stones into smaller particles so that they can be passed naturally through the body without the need for surgery.
Among Dr. Taber's other leading roles, the served as the chief of urology at the Sierra Medical Center in El Paso and as the chief of the medical staff at Columbia West Hospital in El Paso. He was also employed by the VA Hospital and found success as the chief of urology at the 130th General Hospital in Nuremberg, Germany. Additionally, Dr. Taber seized the opportunity to teach as a professor of urology at the Texas Tech School of Medicine in El Paso for over a decade between 1998 and 2009.
As a part of his civic duty, Dr. Taber has distinguished himself as a member of Rotary International, Masonic Lodge #111, Scottish Rite, achieving 32nd degree, and Shriners International. He has also served as a judge at the Santa Fe Indian Market, was a founder of the Americana Museum and excelled as a member of the Texas Rangers Foundation. With respect to medicine, Dr. Taber was active on the medical executive committee for El Paso County and was a member of the state committee on prostate cancer and a member of the board of directors for the American Cancer Society in Austin.
Drawing inspiration from the example of his uncle, who served as a family physician in rural Indiana, Dr. Taber studied at Syracuse University in New York, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1959. Accepted to George Washington University, he subsequently received a Doctor of Medicine in 1963. Additional educational pursuits to his credit include an internship and residency at the Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington from 1963 until 1969. Dr. Taber also served in the U.S. Army, serving as a lieutenant colonel in the medical corps between 1963 and 1972. He has been board certified by the American Board of Urology since 1972.
An elected fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Taber is also a prominent member of several other industry-related organizations. Most notably, he is a past president of the El Paso Medical Society, which is comprised of approximately 900 physicians. He also served on the organization's executive committee, and as the president-elect. Other memberships to his credit include the American Medical Association, the Urological Society International, the Urostomy Association, the Texas Urological Society and, among others, the American Urological Association. Notably, Dr. Taber was named as one of the Best Doctors in Texas three times.
