Dr. Wong obtained a Bachelor of Science in engineering from the University of Hong Kong in 1975 and was subsequently recruited as a product engineer for Motorola Semiconductor Inc. After a year of industrial experience, he began graduate study at Northwestern University in the United States. He carried out measurement of the conduction properties of ionic conductors in the Microwave Characterization Laboratory, earning a Master of Science followed by a Doctor of Philosophy three years later. From 1981 until 1986, Dr. Wong flourished as an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology and has since found further success as an associate professor and full professor.
Dr. Wong has conducted research in a number of areas, including materials characterization, microwave instrumentation and measurement, transient electromagnetics, broadband communication systems, and charge interactions in semiconductor nanostructures. In collaboration with Argonne National Laboratory and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, he has contributed to research on particle accelerators and nanoscale position sensors. The research results have been published in scientific journals and technical conference proceedings. He is the author of the book, Fundamentals of Distributed Amplification, and co-author of a textbook, Electromagnetic Fields and Waves.
While advancing his academic career, Dr. Wong simultaneously excelled as a director of research and development for a Chicago-based telecommunications company throughout the mid-1990s. He served as a consultant to industrial organizations in the area of applied electromagnetics and as a reviewer for the National Science Foundation and several publishers. He is the originator of a number of patents related to microwave electronics and communications.
In addition to teaching and research, Dr. Wong previously thrived as the director of the graduate program for the Illinois Institute of Technology's department of electrical and computer engineering for eight years. From 2001 until 2005, he served as the chairman of the aforementioned department. Dr. Wong attributes a great deal of his success to his parents, who brought him to an aerospace exhibition when he was a child and inspired his lifelong passion for engineering. He also had dedicated teachers and mentors throughout his formal education.
