After adopting her third child, who had some learning difficulties, Ms. Perry was inspired to enter the field of education. During the early years of her career, she gained valuable expertise through her work as an English teacher and career adviser with the Metropolitan Technical Institute between 1995 and 2002. Ms. Perry subsequently furthered her own education, earning a Masters in Special Education from New Jersey City University in 2005 and her second Masters degree in Reading from Montclair State University.
Backed by her considerable experience, Ms. Perry currently excels as a reading specialist for the Paterson Board of Education. In this position, she teaches children not only how to read, but how to decode words, recognize sounds, comprehend oral as well as written language and learn how to write in a structured way. As a reading specialist, Ms. Perry is proud to bridge the learning gaps children have through her adaptable methods; not all students learn in the same way, so she changes her style of teaching according to her students.
In her years as a reading specialist, Ms. Perry obtained a Master of Education Leadership and Supervision from William Paterson University in 2018 and a certification in educational leadership and supervision from the aforementioned university's College of Education that same year. Driven to remain aware of changes in the field, she is affiliated with the Educational Reading Society of Paterson. Alongside her primary responsibilities, Ms. Perry is active as a board member for the School Improvement Action Plan and a member of the First Seventh-Day Adventist Church of Montclair.
In light of her professional expertise, Ms. Perry was honored as the Best Supporting Teacher in Special Education through Public School 26 between 2005 and 2008. Likewise, she was presented with the New Jersey Middle School Consortium/New Jersey MSA Team of Excellence Award through Paterson School 26 in 2008, Having received the Teacher of the Year Award from Paterson Public School in 2009, Ms. Perry accepted an Award of Appreciation for Outstanding Service from the Guyana 53rd Anniversary of Flag Raising Committee of the city of Newark in 2019.
Looking toward the future, Ms. Perry intends to expand upon her quinoa farm. After her father passed away, she inherited 35 acres of land and decided to plant quinoa upon discovering that there would be a shortage in the coming years. She did a feasibility study on quinoa and found that quinoa could help solve food shortage issues in impoverished countries, so she met with the United Nations leaders of her home country of Guyana and received the necessary funds to assist with the project. Ms. Perry hopes to help the Guyanese people farm their own quinoa in the coming years.
