LAS VEGAS, NV, August 09, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Frederick Peters has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected based on current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Mr. Peters earned a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from Parks College of St Louis University in 1957 and, later, a Masters of Business Administration from Columbia University in New York in 1970. His youthful interest in spaceflight, stemming from a book he read titled "Rockets, Guided Missiles and Torpedoes" in high school, led Mr. Peters initially to a career in rocketry with the Atlas ICBM and later in manned space flight at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
Upon graduating from Parks College, Mr. Peters joined Convair/Astronautics (later General Dynamics Astronautics, GD/A) in its San Diego location as a Weight Control Engineer, realizing his early interest by working on the Atlas ICBM, the most powerful rocket in the U.S. arsenal at the time. At GD/A he was part of an advanced design team that provided an Apollo feasibility study for NASA in 1961, followed by a contract proposal for Apollo later that year. He joined NASA's Manned Spacecraft Center's (later renamed the Johnson Space Center) Apollo Spacecraft Program Office in 1962. He was initially responsible for spacecraft weight control but was soon reassigned as a Command and Service Module Project Engineer. As a Project Engineer, Mr. Peters was responsible for all aspects of his assigned spacecraft from the time it entered final assembly, thru test and checkout and ultimately shipment to the test site. Spacecraft assignments included: Boilerplate-14 (a manned systems test bed); Boilerplate 15 (an unmanned Saturn flight test spacecraft); Spacecraft-008 (a flight configured, manned spacecraft tested in the NASA/JSC thermal vacuum chamber); Apollo 7 Earth orbital mission (the first manned Apollo flight); and Apollo 17 (the last lunar landing mission). After the Apollo Program ended, Mr. Peters was assigned to the NASA/JSC Skylab Program Office as Project Engineer for the Skylab Orbital Workshop, the largest component of the United States' first space station, which included living quarters, work and storage areas and research equipment.
Following Skylab Mr. Peters' career moved to the business functions of NASA/JSC program management. He managed a group responsible for Planning and Scheduling for the Space Shuttle Program Office, the Orbiter Project Office, and the Orbiter Payloads Project Office. In 1982 Mr. Peters left NASA to become a management consultant at Scott Sciences (astronaut Dave Scott's company) and later spending some time with a venture capital firm. He returned to the Aerospace industry in 1987 as Director of Program Control for Grumman Aerospace's Space Station Integration Company headquartered in Reston, Virginia. In 1992, he returned to NASA/JSC and was assigned as Resident Manager for Work Package 2 of the International Space Station at the McDonald Douglas plant in Huntington Beach, California. Mr. Peters' final assignment was as the NASA/JSC resident representative to the California Space Institute (Director Sally Ride, the first American woman in space) at the University of California San Diego on a project called Kidsat. He retired from NASA in 1997 and considers having worked with a younger generation of college students interested in space as the optimal way to end a long career in manned space programs. Mr. Peters attributes his contributions to the manned space program to having been born at just the right time to have been able to participate in humankinds' initial steps into space exploration. As well as to a certain amount of luck to have been in the right place at the right time.
During retirement, Mr. Peters has been a frequent speaker about the Apollo Program for various organizations, some of which have been placed on YouTube. He is currently (2021) being interviewed on his Apollo experiences by the Golden Network.TV for a future series to be made available via Roku.
