For nearly 20 years, Mr. Ohonme has thrived as the founder and president of Samaritan's Feet International, which is a nonprofit organization that strives to eradicate foot-borne diseases, while also giving hope for a better future, to impoverished children around the world through the gift of shoes and act of foot-washing. To date, Samaritan's Feet has distributed more than 8.3 million pairs of shoes to children in 108 countries. By supplying new pairs of shoes, the organization aims to instill hope and encourage children to follow their dreams.
The inspiration for Samaritan's Feet occurred when Mr. Ohonme, who was born in Nigeria, received his first pair of shoes at the age of nine from an American missionary. This gift, along with the missionary's encouraging words, allowed Mr. Ohonme to nurture his passion for basketball and earn a full athletic scholarship to college in the United States. After obtaining a Master of Science from North Dakota State University, he enjoyed a successful career in logistics and supply chain management. When Mr. Ohonme returned to Nigeria as an adult, he realized how much his life had changed after receiving a single pair of shoes. Alongside his wife, Tracie, he formed Samaritan's Feet with the goal of giving hope and a pair of shoes to millions of children around the world.
Mr. Ohonme is also the inventor of the World Shoe, which protects feet from infections through a built-in anti-microbial agent. Throughout his career with Samaritan's Feet, he has served as a motivating at numerous events, such as the Catalyst Conference and the International Vatican Conference. In 2021, he was selected to receive the Pontifical Hero Award for Inspiration from the Pontifical Council for Culture and the Cura Foundation. Within the next few years, Mr. Ohonme intends to have met the original goal and served 10 million people with a pairs of shoes and a message of hope while continuing to pursue the organization's vision of creating a world with zero shoeless children.
