Dr. Ayres is renowned as the head of the Electronic and Biological Nanostructures Laboratory in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Michigan State University. Inspired by a high school biology teacher, she pursued an education at the Johns Hopkins University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in physics and biophysics in 1977. Dr. Ayres continued her academic efforts at Purdue University, from which she earned a Doctor of Philosophy in physics in 1985.
Dr. Ayres began her career as a research physicist at the United States Navy White Oak Laboratory in Silver Spring, Maryland. She further flourished as the director of the National Science Foundation Program for Quantum Electronics, Plasmas, and Electromagnetics before transitioning to academia. The shift from government research to the field of education remains a career highlight for Dr. Ayres, as she continues to excel as an associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Michigan State University.
Dr. Ayres has been recognized for her excellence in research, which has included notable work centered on nanoscience and quantum communications, and nervous system injury and wound healing. A two-time NASA faculty fellow and former invited visiting scholar in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Dartmouth College, she has been presented with a Chair of International Cooperation at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, and a Distinguished Woman Scholar award from Purdue University. In 2020, she became the Michigan State University Affiliate for the NASA Michigan Space Grant Consortium. Dr. Ayres is an active member of the American Physical Society and the American Society for Cell Biology.
