Leading a diverse and rewarding career for 30 years, Ms. Matlock retired from the Knoxville, Tennessee public school system in 2006. Teaching reading, science, and chemistry over the years, she additionally served as a school librarian at the middle and high school levels. Ms. Matlock particularly enjoyed working with students of all ages and enjoyed seeing them thrive.
In 2005, Ms. Matlock returned to college to become a surgical nurse. Her decision to pursue nursing was the result of her husband passing away and a need for change. As an extension of her teaching career, she was active as a coordinator and coach of the Long-Term Problem Odyssey of the Mind at Bearden Middle School between 1992 and 1993, a former chairman of the Knox County Textbook Committee for chemistry in 1997-1998 and a member of the state textbook committee for chemistry in 2002. Ms. Matlock also co-authored "Curriculum Development for Chemistry" in 1989.
Inspired by her parents, as her mother notably worked as a teacher for many years, Ms. Matlock initially studied at the University of Tennessee, earning a bachelor's degree in 1973, a master's degree in 1974 and a Master of Science in library science in 1978. Years later, she obtained an associate degree in nursing at Lincoln Memorial University in 2007 and a Master of Science in nursing at Gonzaga University in 2013. Ms. Matlock is likewise certified as a secondary teacher, a registered nurse and a certified perioperative nurse.
A prominent member of several industry-related organizations, Ms. Matlock has been affiliated with the Tennessee Education Association, the Tennessee Science Teacher Association and the National Science Teachers Association, among others. She was recruited as a member, a former school representative and a legislative committee member for the Knox County Education Association as well. She was also selected by the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce to the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce leadership class. With respect to her work in education, she was selected to be a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Honor Society of Education, and was past president of the Alpha Tau Chapter. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nursing.
Recognized for her success in the classroom, Ms. Matlock was honored as Outstanding High School Teacher by the faculty at the school where she taught. A celebrated Marquis listee, she has been cited in the 58th and 60th editions of Who's Who in America, the third and fourth editions of Who's Who in American Education, and the 25th edition of Who's Who of American Women. For her stellar work in health care, Ms. Matlock has been a member of the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses.
