Now retired from a successful career in medicine, Dr. Tietke spent 33 years specializing in gastroenterology in Huntsville, Alabama, from 1975 to 2008. A native of Niengraben, Germany, he came to the U.S. at the age of 30 after completing his medical education. Dr. Tietke formed his own practice, Huntsville Gastroenterology Associates PC, which became the Center for Colon and Digestive Disease, in 1975. He retired from the practice of gastroenterology in 2008 and did clinical research for several years. Since 2014, Dr. Tietke has been working part-time conducting health assessments for Medicare patients.
Specializing in the treatment of various conditions ranging from irritable bowel syndrome and inflammatory bowel diseases to diverticular disease, cancer and colitis, Dr. Tietke has always enjoyed working in his field. He particularly enjoyed working closely with his patients and trying to improve their daily lives through various motivational techniques. He was also dedicated to teaching young doctors. As a clinical associate professor of internal medicine, he taught medical students in his daily practice. He received multiple awards for Excellence in Teaching from the Medical School.
Dr. Tietke earned his medical degree from the University of Tuebingen in 1967, and his MD degree from the University of Goettingen in 1968. He then completed a two year internship at the City Hospital of Bietigheim, all in Germany. This was followed by an internship at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, Michigan, in 1970, a residency in internal medicine, and a fellowship in gastroenterology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit between 1971 and 1975. Dr. Tietke is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology.
