For more than 50 years, Mr. Hopkins has flourished as a lawyer for nonprofit, tax-exempt organizations. After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan in 1964, he earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence three years later from the George Washington University National Law Center. In 1971, he received a Master of Laws in taxation from the aforementioned university. Throughout the following 40 years, Mr. Hopkins thrived while practicing law for various firms in Washington, D.C., and Kansas City, Missouri.
During this period, Mr. Hopkins also served as a law professor at the George Washington University Law School and the University of Missouri Law School. In 2016, he opened his own firm in Kansas City and has since found tremendous success while representing private foundations, other charities, religious groups, educational and scientific institutions, associations, and other nonprofit entities. Mr. Hopkins has additionally taught nonprofit law at the University of Kansas School of Law since 2008.
As one of the most respected nonprofit lawyers in the entire U.S., Mr. Hopkins has written over 40 books about different aspects of nonprofit law, such as "The Tax Law of Charitable Giving" and "The Law of Tax-Exempt Organizations," which has served as the definitive source of legal information for nonprofit organizations since the publication of its first edition in 1975. In 2007, he was honored with the Outstanding Nonprofit Lawyer Award from the American Bar Association. Nine years later, Mr. Hopkins fulfilled a decades-long goal when he obtained a doctorate in law from the University of Kansas School of Law at the age of 72. He chronicled the joyous experience in a 2018 book that he appropriately titled "Fulfilling a Dream: The Ultimate Law Degree."
