Feiler with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Ms. Feiler celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. Employed with the Florida Department of Health in Broward County for 35 years, Ms. Feiler was the director of health promotion and social marketing from 1980 until her retirement in 2015. During her tenure, she was instrumental in the oversight of health related information through the media throughout the county. She was involved in the planning of traffic safety and bike paths in Broward County, and among other responsibilities she was a clinical coordinator for the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene during the H1N1 swine flu program.
Five years after her retirement, Ms. Feiler decided to become active as a coronavirus team member for the Florida Department of Health in Broward County. She continues in this role, making an impact on her local community.
Ms. Feiler's passion for public health began in her college education. One of her professors inspired her to pursue the field and, after graduating with her degree, she began teaching health education at Queensborough Community College and Brooklyn College in New York from 1973. She spent seven years in the classroom before transitioning into public service.
In a civic capacity, Ms. Feiler led the Tobacco Free Project as its founder; the project was the first tobacco cessation program in Broward County. She also served on numerous boards and coalitions locally, statewide and federally to represent public health, including the literacy coalition and the county human rights board, and volunteered her time with the Minivan Healthcare Project. She is the former chairman of the Smart Growth Partnership of Broward County and more recently served on the Florida Comprehensive Cancer Control Collaborative between 2001 and 2015, with which she was also involved on its risk reduction subcommittee.
Today, Ms. Feiler remains a member of the complete streets technical advisory committee and the Broward County Schools superintendent's wellness and educational supports committee. Additionally, she is a life member of the American Cancer Society, with which she has been active on multiple committees and boards.
An alumnus of Hunter College in New York, Ms. Feiler received a Bachelor of Arts in health education. She subsequently acquired a Master of Science in health and safety education at the University of Illinois and a Master of Arts in gerontology at Lynn University. She also completed coursework in gerontology at Columbia University in 1979. Ms. Feiler notably holds a certificate in health care leadership and is a master specialist of health education.
A member of a plethora of industry-related organizations in support of her professional endeavors, Ms. Feiler has been aligned with the Florida Association of Professional Health Educators, the Florida Public Health Association, the American Public Health Association, and the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists, among others.
Honoring her success, Ms. Feiler was named Public Citizen of the Year by the National Association of Social Workers, received the Ann S. Loop Award for Outstanding Health Education, and was recognized with the Ninth Annual Excellence in Healthcare Award by the South Florida Business Journal. She has also received several state awards and was named to the Hunter College Hall of Fame.
