Professor Polan is Professor Emerita from the Corcoran College of Art and Design at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. and an internationally recognized portrait artist. She was the founder and chairman of Faces of the Fallen, an exhibition commemorating the first American service men and women who were killed in Afghanistan and Iraq. She also co-founded Insight Institute, an organization that promoted critical thinking and creative problem solving in various professional fields. Professor Polan taught and chaired the drawing and painting department at Corcoran College of Art and Design at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. She was also a guest lecturer at institutions in Japan and China, lectured on her artwork throughout the world from Europe and Asia to Australia, directed a summer program in France at the La Napoule Art Foundation, and was a visiting artist at Art Therapy Italia in Italy.
Best known for photographing and painting the official portraits of industry and government leaders, Ms. Polan participated in numerous national and international solo and group exhibitions throughout her illustrious career. Her portfolio of work has also included numerous private commissions. During her career, she was honored to be involved in the U.S. Department of State's Art in Embassy Program, which included artwork showcased abroad in Denmark and Fiji. Most notable, however, was her significant contribution as founder and chairman of Faces of the Fallen. An exhibition of over 1,300 portraits by 230 American artists, the successful exhibition showcased the many U.S. service men and women who died as a result of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan between 2001 and 2004.
Civically, Ms. Polan was a board member for the Washington Project for the Arts. She was also a member and past president of the Corcoran Faculty Association. She is currently on the board for the Smith Center for Healing and the Arts in Washington, DC.
Ms. Polan developed a passion for the arts as a child. Her mother was a part of a group that founded a local museum in Huntington, West Virginia after WWII. Her father led efforts to create the Harry Bertoia memorial at Marshall University after the Marshall Football Team was killed in a plane crash in 1970. After high school, Ms. Polan studied at Hollins University, achieving a Bachelor of Arts in art history in 1967. She also completed graduate work at the Corcoran College of Art and Design, Ecole du Louvre in Paris, and the Tyler School of Art and Architecture in Philadelphia. As a part of her professional commitments, Ms. Polan is a member of Art Table, the Cosmos Club, the International Women's Forum, and the International Women's Forum of Washington DC.
Ms. Polan was recognized with a Distinguished Alumni Award from both The Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania and Hollins University. She was also honored with the prestigious Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Outstanding Public Service Award, which is the highest awards granted to a civilian for public service. The award recognized her work with the Faces of the Fallen exhibition, as well as the support she provided the men and women of the Armed Forces and their families.
