Well regarded as a physician and scientist, Dr. Lu has garnered a laudable reputation through her work at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, for which she serves in a variety of roles. Among them, she is a professor of medicine, the director of the Karsh Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, the women's guild chair in gastroenterology, and the vice chairman of basic science and translational research. She is also a professor of medicine in residence at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). Dr. Lu has notably taught and mentored over 50 pre- and post-doctoral trainees and over 20 junior faculty during her tenure.
In addition to her primary career endeavors, Dr. Lu has worked diligently in the Lu Laboratory at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center since August 2014. Specializing in the study of numerous research programs, mainly on mechanisms and treatments of liver injury, fibrosis, and cancer, she has put particular emphasis on two molecules: the S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) and glutathione (GSH). Much of Dr. Lu's research has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health since 1992. She has served as a principal investigator on five different studies in the past 10 years, and has contributed over 260 peer-reviewed articles, invited reviews and book chapters as a result of her research. Likewise, she has lent her expertise in editorial roles for several scholarly journals.
Dr. Lu is a former faculty member of the University of Southern California (USC), where she taught for over a decade as a professor of medicine in the Keck School of Medicine, beginning in 2001, and as an associate professor of medicine between 1996 and 2001. She was also instrumental as the associate chief of the division of gastrointestinal and liver diseases from 2011 to 2014 and as the associate director of the USC research center for liver diseases from 2003 until 2014.
Dr. Lu received a Bachelor of Arts in 1978 at UCLA and a Doctor of Medicine in the university's David Geffen School of Medicine in 1982. Additional educational pursuits to her credit include a residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and a fellowship at UCLA. Eminently qualified in her field, Dr. Lu is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology. She is also a member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation, the Association of American Physicians, the American Gastroenterological Association, and the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.
Highlighting her achievements, Dr. Lu has received several awards and recognitions. Among them, she was named as the Best Attending of the Firm in Internal Medicine by the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California in 2000, earned an Outstanding Investigator Award from the Western Society of Clinical Investigation in 2005, and received a Mayo Soley Award for Lifetime Achievement in Science and Mentoring from the Western Society of Clinical Investigation in 2012. Dr. Lu was also recently named to Top Doctor in Los Angeles for 2021.
