An esteemed attorney and educator who began her career more than 40 years ago, Ms. Woodley is currently a judge pro tempore for the Maricopa County Superior Court in Phoenix, Arizona, since 2017, as well as a judge pro tempore for the City of Tempe Municipal Court. She is also a self-employed, certified law career coach, where she has been instrumental in assisting law students and lawyers in the field since 2018. Located in Tempe, Arizona, some of Ms. Woodley's services include goal setting and accountability, mock interviews and resume expertise. A former full-time faculty member at three different institutions for 28 years, she notably spent time at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at in Tempe, where she was director of the new Lodestar Mediation Clinic and a clinical professor of law. In the fall of 2021, Ms. Woodley will teach a course at the James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona in Tucson.
An experienced attorney who has substantial expertise in civil procedure and federal and state court litigation, Ms. Woodley clerked for the Honorable Carl A. Muecke, Chief Justice for the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona from 1981 to 1983, and was an associate at Winston & Strawn LLP from 1983 to 1988. She later served as Section Chief for the Arizona Attorney General's Office in the Civil Rights Division from 2004 to 2006 as well.
A prolific author, Ms. Woodley has contributed numerous legal articles on mediation, summary jury trials and other topics over the years. She is also the author of a book, entitled "Litigating in Federal Court: A Guide to the Rules," through the Carolina Academic Press, which is now in its second edition.
Ms. Woodley studied at the University of Arizona, where she achieved a Bachelor of Arts in journalism and political science, summa cum laude, in 1978. She then earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence, cum laude, at the Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law at Arizona State University in 1981. She has been admitted to practice by the Arizona, D.C., Ohio and California Bar Associations; the U.S. District Court for the Districts of Arizona and D.C.; the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. and Ninth Circuits; the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit; and the Supreme Court of the United States. In 2016, Ms. Woodley became a master certified life coach through the Life Coach Institute of Orange County in California.
To further serve the legal community, Ms. Woodley has been a long-time member of the American Bar Association (ABA), where she was active on several committees and involved in a very successful national mediation advocacy competition for law students (of which she was also the national chair). She has also been a member of several other professional organizations, including the American Trial Lawyers Association and the Arizona Bar Association.
Ms. Woodley was recognized with several awards for teaching, including Professor of the Year by Arizona Summit Law School during the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 academic school years.
