Ms. Martin enjoyed a long and successful career in education that spanned 34 years. After college, she began teaching for Cajon Valley Unified School District in 1969. After 5 years teaching and 7 years raising a young family, she accepted a position to teach and serve in the Rowland Unified School District in Rowland Heights, California. She became a reading specialist and expert in Reading Recovery. Ms. Martin established the successful Reading Recovery program at her school, which assisted students aged 5-7 in receiving extra help in reading. In this capacity she was instrumental in helping children learn how to read and become life-long, independent learners.
Apart from her teaching responsibilities, Ms. Martin produced a series of books that she and other teachers utilized at her school as well as at several schools throughout the district. The series, titled "The L.A.P. (Learning About Print) Book Library", was highly regarded and proved to be a wonderful resource for children. Passionate about her work, Ms. Martin thoroughly enjoyed teaching young students, especially those who were struggling in reading. As a child, she, too, had a difficult time learning to read, so being able to contribute as an adult was considerably rewarding. Heavily involved in community work, Ms. Martin has volunteered her time in recent years with various charities and at her church. She also is involved with the national organization Bible Study Fellowship.
Ms. Martin studied at the University of California Los Angeles, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in music. She studied at San Diego State College where she earned her teaching credential. Years later, in 2001, while teaching full-time, she completed a Master of Arts in reading at National University.
