A leader in the field of education, Dr. McCoy-Cain, now retired, found success at Nova Southeastern University from 1965 to 2001. Having previously served as a teacher for Broward County Public Schools between 1961 and 1965, she flourished as an educator of Miami-Dade Public Schools from 1960 to 1961, after serving the University Lower School Center as coordinator for both the learning resource program and cultural arts program. In addition, she served in the position of Assistant Director for the Lower School of NSU. Additionally, Dr. McCoy-Cain contributed to the school as an adjunct professor of both the undergraduate department for early childhood education and the graduate program for specific learning disabilities.
Prior to embarking on her impressive career, Dr. McCoy-Cain studied at Edward Waters College, from which she graduated with an Associate in Arts and a Bachelor of Science. Obtaining a Master of Education in special education from Florida Atlantic University in 1973, she later earned a Doctor of Education in early childhood education and supervision/administration from Nova Southeastern University in 1980. Dr. McCoy-Cain considers her greatest accomplishment to be mentoring aspiring teachers during her time as a faculty member at the latter institution.
Deeply involved with her community, Dr. McCoy-Cain volunteers with Habitat for Humanity and her local homeless shelter. The author of "Spotlight on Cultural Arts" and the co-author of "A Teacher's Resource Guide to Learning Disabilities," she has conducted numerous workshops in her field. Inducted into the Broward County Women's Hall of Fame and the Broward County Seniors Hall of Fame, Dr. McCoy-Cain was presented with the Community Service Award from the Living Legends Awards for Service to Humanity in 2018 and the Outstanding Woman of the Year Award from the Kappa Kappa Omega chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha, among numerous other accolades.
