Dr. McDonald has thrived as an educator, director of Crichton College education program as well as other leadership/administrative positions at Rhodes College, Christian Brothers, and Union University. After obtaining a Bachelor of Science in elementary education from LeMoyne-Owen College in 1965, she was recruited as an elementary school teacher for Memphis City Schools, which has since merged with the Shelby County School District. Dr. McDonald advanced to a lead teacher for Shelby County School District and earned a Master of Education from Memphis State University. Two years before retirement from Shelby County School District 1994, she achieved a Doctor of Education with a concentration in educational leadership and higher education, from the University of Mississippi.

She taught elementary for several decades, she thoroughly enjoys teaching at the college as well; because of the numerous commonalities she shares with her students. Throughout the course of her remarkable career. Dr. McDonald has additionally served as a mentor for many college students and former colleagues
Dr. McDonald is extremely proud to be the first person in her family to have earned a graduate degree. She remains involved with the educational community in her home state of Tennessee by maintaining active memberships with the Tennessee Education Association and the National Education Association. Dr. McDonald attributes a great deal of her success to her determination, which enabled her to overcome a variety of financial obstacles in order to obtain a college education.
