With over 55 years of experience in the field of education to his credit, Dr. McDaniel is proud to celebrate a storied tenure with Converse College. He began his career with the aforementioned institution in 1971 as a professor. Over the course of his subsequent professional journey, he excelled as the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, the vice president of academy affairs, an interim president, a provost and the senior vice president. Following these inimitable accomplishments, Dr. McDaniel retired in 2015.
Raised by parents who valued the importance of education, Dr. McDaniel initially obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Hampden-Sydney College in 1963. Thereafter, he attended Johns Hopkins University, earning a Master of Arts in Teaching in 1964, a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies in 1968 and a Doctor of Philosophy 1971. During this time, he established himself in the field as a teacher at the Gilman School in Baltimore between 1964 and 1965. Furthermore, Dr. McDaniel found success as an administrator at Johns Hopkins University from 1965 to 1971.
Supplementing his professional career, Dr. McDaniel has served as the executive editor of the Clearing House from 1999 to 2020 and as a consultant editor of Academic Leader between 1999 and 2019. He has authored such works as "The New Dean's Survival Guide, Advice from an Academic Leader," "School Law for South Carolina Educators," "At Home in South Carolina," "Dean's Dialogue," "Dr. Luke's Prescriptions for Spiritual Health" and "Public Education in South Carolina." Furthermore, Dr. McDaniel has contributed to over 300 publications, articles, book chapters, essays and reviews.
Long dedicated to his local community, Dr. McDaniel contributed as the chairman of the Spartanburg County Commission on Excellence in Education, the Spartanburg County Board Education, the policy board of directors for the South Carolina Center for Teacher Recruitment, and the Weekday School First Presbyterian Church. Additionally, he participated as a member of the institutional review board of Mary Black Hospital and served as an elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg. Dr. McDaniel also served as the president of the board of directors of the Charles Lea Center of Spartanburg for two separate terms.
For his contributions in the field, Dr. McDaniel is honored to have been presented with the Greenville-Spartanburg Chapter Service Award, the Order of the Silver Crescent Governor's Award for Contributions to the State and Region, and the Patrick Henry Award for Contributions to the College and the Commonwealth of Virginia from Hampden-Sydney College. In 2021, he was presented with the Thomas McDaniel Award, which bears his namesake, for his outstanding doctoral dissertations at Converse College. Dr. McDaniel attributes his success to his colleagues, the support of his family, and the time he has spent pursuing his research endeavors.
