As a retired banking executive and president of the Federal Reserve Bank in Richmond, Virginia, Dr. Black concluded his career with the organization in 1992 after nearly 20 years of service in his prestigious position. Working for the organization since 1954, he joined the team as a research associate and worked his way up from an associate economist to the first vice president. The bank in Richmond is notably one of 12 regional Federal Reserve Banks that work alongside the board of governors to strengthen the economy and surrounding communities.
Aside from his busy banking career, Dr. Black was involved with several other organizations. He was a board director for Media General, an advisory board member for the Health Corporation of Virginia and a member of the Virginia Economic Recovery Commission, among other roles. He was also named as the J. Boone Aiken visiting professor of banking at Francis Marion College in 1991 and had earlier taught courses as a lecturer and instructor at the University of Virginia and as an assistant professor at the University of Tennessee. Additionally, Dr. Black contributed professional articles and other published works in his area of expertise.
Civically, Dr. Black has been extensively involved throughout the community with local businesses, educational institutions, hospitals and nonprofit organizations in a variety of ways. Some of his roles included activity on the governors committee on Defense Convention and Economic Adjustment, as the past president of the United Way of Greater Richmond, and as the chairperson of the advisory committee for Center Banking Education at Virginia Union University. Dr. Black was also a board member for the Winchester Star and the Harrisonburg Daily News-Record in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
Dr. Black obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1950, a Master of Arts in 1951 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1955 at the University of Virginia. Prior to receiving his degrees, he served in the U.S. Army between 1946 and 1947. A member of the Virginia Inter-Government Institute for many years, Dr. Black served on the board of directors from 1986 to 1993. Other professional memberships to his credit include the Raven Society and several honor societies.
In recognition of his career and civic endeavors, Dr. Black has been recognized on numerous occasions. He first received the George Washington Honor Medal Award from Freedoms Foundation in Valley Forge in 1978 for an article he had written. Likewise, he received the J. Curtis Hall Award from the Virginia Council of Economic Education in 1991 for outstanding support of economic education in Virginia and a Silver Hope Award from the Virginia chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in 1992. Furthermore, Dr. Black serves as the namesake for the Robert P. Black Research Professorship in Economics at the University of Virginia.
