Dr. Lorece V. Edwards Recognized by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Public Health in Maryland

Dr. Edwards has flourished with Morgan State University as a Professor and Activist



    WINDSOR MILL, MD, August 31, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Lorece V. Edwards has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Edwards obtained a Bachelor of Arts in human and social resources from Sojourner-Douglass College in Baltimore, Maryland, and followed this achievement in 1999 with a master's degree in human services from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, and furthered her education with a DrPH in public health from Morgan State University in Baltimore in 2004.

Dr. Edwards initially found success as an Advocate Supervisor in the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services – Justice Resources from 1982 to 1990 and subsequently with the Family Preservation Program with the Pressley Ridge Schools from 1990 to 2000. She further made an impact as a domestic violence content expert with the Health and Human Services Administration's Office of Minority Health, dedicated to improving the health of racial and ethnic minority populations, from 2000 to 2002, and as a project director/qualitative researcher with Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore from 2003 to 2007. Since 2007, Dr. Edwards has prospered as director of community practice and outreach, director for the center for sexual health advancement and prevention education and professor of public health in the Department of Behavioral Health Sciences at Morgan State University's School of Community Health and Policy.

Dr. Edwards has been the recipient of many honors during her career, including a Distinguished Alumni Award from Morgan State University in 2015 and 2017, the Allen G. Penczek Service-Learning Award for excellence in teaching in 2017, a listing as one of Maryland's Top 100 Women in 2013, 2016, and 2019 and a University Appreciation Award, in recognition of outstanding achievements and accomplishments in research, from Morgan State University president Dr. David Wilson.

Additionally, Dr. Edwards has received several grants of more than 4 million dollars to tackle communicable diseases and substance use among youth and emerging adults. Additionally, she was presented a $625,000 grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to initiate a Drug Free Community Coalition in West Baltimore. An area where she was raised and grew-up. The grant titled the Get SMART Drug Free Community Coalition aims to delay, reduce, and eliminate underage alcohol use and substance use among youth ages 12 – 17. She has published several research papers presenting her research on public health, with her chief interests being HIV intervention and treatment, historical trauma and health outcomes, community trauma and violence, alcohol/substance use and structural and social determinants of health, equity and risk research and social justice.

Dr. Edwards' memberships at Morgan State University include the conflict of interest, workload policy, trans-disciplinary work and innovation Committees. Externally, she is a member of the following organizations the Interdisciplinary Association for Population Health Science, the American Public Health Association and the Society for the Analysis of African American Public Health Issues (SAAPHI). Furthermore, Dr. Edwards has a pending patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for her new and contemporary theory – the Perceived Risk Hierarchy Theory (PRHT).

Upon earning her master's degree, Dr. Edwards decided to enter Morgan State University after reading a newspaper article stating that it was the first historically Black college or university to offer a DrPH in public health, and she wished to become an agent of change in that field. She attributes her success to her family, her deep faith and her friends. In the coming years, Dr. Edwards hopes to conduct more community-based research. Her motto, from acclaimed author James Baldwin, is "Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced."
