Named a distinguished professor emeritus at Virginia State University (VSU) in 2021, Dr. Burton taught various courses in the department of mathematics on the Petersburg campus for 43 years. His long and successful career at the university included serving as a faculty advisor for several student organizations, chairing a multitude of committees, including the VSU faculty senate (formerly known as the faculty council), participating on the university calendar committee for 30 years, and excelling as the longest-serving commencement chief marshal in the institution's history. Off campus, Dr. Burton was instrumental in teaching graduate-level courses for in-service teachers throughout central Virginia. He also delivered academic presentations to many professional conferences throughout the United States.
Active in community affairs in Petersburg and Richmond, Virginia, and throughout Chesterfield County, Dr. Burton notably chaired the board of directors for the Communities in Schools non-profit affiliate in Petersburg. He was also on the board of directors for the Southside Virginia portion of the American Red Cross. Other commitments included activity with the Southern Initiative Algebra Project's design team, various roles with several Parent Teacher Associations, and involvement with the Ettrick Youth Sports Association and the Central Virginia Undergraduate Mathematics Scholarship Program.
Dr. Burton received a Bachelor of Science at Livingstone College in 1976 and a Master of Arts at The Ohio State University in 1978. Several years later, he was the first African American individual to achieve a Doctor of Philosophy at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1986. Dr. Burton holds a North Carolina teaching certification and Sloan-C online instruction certification.
Dr. Burton has garnered recognition as a member and president of the VSU chapter of the American Association of University Professors. He also served as president of the VSU chapter of the Phi Delta Kappa education fraternity, is a life member and national scholar of the historically African American fraternity Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and is a member of the mathematical honor society Kappa Mu Epsilon.
Selected for several honors for his time in education, including several Teaching Effectiveness Awards and an Outstanding Faculty Award from the department of mathematics from VSU, Dr. Burton was also named Educator of the Year by the Petersburg alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta. For his contributions to his community, he was awarded a Father of the Year Award from the Petersburg chapter of Jack and Jill of America, which is a leadership organization established in 1938 by African American mothers. Recognized with inclusion in Outstanding Young Men of America, Dr. Burton is also a celebrated Marquis listee who has been cited in the first edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering.
