Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in chosen fields are all taken into account in the selection process.
Dr. King resolved early in her life to act as an agent of positive change, drawing inspiration from her work in the civil rights movement and the importance of voter registration. She also helped in organizing the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party's challenge to the Democratic Party at the latter's 1964 national convention.
Dr. King received a Bachelor of Arts in English literature from Ohio Wesleyan University, where she served as president of the English Writers Club and chaired the Student Committee on Race Relations. She has had the honor of being a decades-long friend and advisor to President Jimmy Carter. In the early 1990s, she worked as an expert consultant on the Middle East for the ABC London News Bureau when led by Pierre Salinger.
As a respected voice in the field of nonviolent action, Dr. King has authored a myriad of published works, including five acclaimed books on nonviolent struggle. She received a 1988 Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Book Award for Freedom Song: A Personal Story of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement. She has also edited and co-authored a number of volumes published by the Africa Programme of the University for Peace and sometimes blogs for the online magazine "Waging Nonviolence."
Outside her primary professional endeavors of strengthening historical and practical knowledge of the nonviolent transformation of conflict, Dr. King has served on the board of various organizations, among them the Albert Einstein Institution, the Jefferson Awards of the American Institution for Public Service, Global Action Inc., and the Arca Foundation. She is on the international editorial board of the Journal of African-Centered Solutions for Peace and Security, based at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia, and previously sat on the board of the AMIDEAST Educational and Testing Service, which helps Middle Eastern youths pursue studies at U.S. universities.
