Dr. Higgins has held fellowships at such institutions as the University of Vienna, the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, and the Australian National University, and she has been a scholar-in-residence at the Rockefeller Foundation's Bellagio Center. She was also active as a visiting professor at the University of Auckland in New Zealand for over a decade. A prolific author, Dr. Higgins has published over 70 articles and several books, and she has edited or co-edited a variety of anthologies and textbooks.
Dr. Higgins is a member of a number of learned societies, among them the North American Nietzsche Society, the International Association for Aesthetics, the American Philosophical Association, the International Society for Research on Emotion, the Society for Asian and Comparative Philosophy, and the American Society of Aesthetics. She served as president of the last of these organizations, delivering her presidential address on the topic of aesthetics in relation to grief. Civically, she has served as a member of the board of trustees for Austin Shakespeare since 2017.
Dr. Higgins spent her undergraduate years at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, from which she obtained a bachelor's degree in music. Subsequently, she earned two master's degrees and her doctorate in philosophy from Yale University. She has been honored with an Alumni Achievement Award from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, an Outstanding Monograph Prize from the American Society for Aesthetics, and a Silver Spurs Centennial Teaching Fellowship Award at the University of Texas at Austin.
