After growing up in Italy, Dr. Crea earned a Bachelor of Science in organic chemistry and furthered his expertise with a Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry through the University of Pavia. It was his biochemistry professor, Giovanni Cuzzocrea, that ignited his passion and interest in the subject. Following this period, he completed postdoctoral work in EMBO DNA chemistry at Leiden University under Professor Jacques Van Boom. Upon the completion of his studies, Dr. Crea was recruited by Genentech in the United States to head the Department of Nucleic Acid Chemistry, where he hired and trained the first synthetic DNA team.
Backed by his outstanding breadth of expertise, Dr. Crea founded BioRen Inc. in 2000. Presently, he excels as the founder, president and chief executive officer of Bioren, Inc. and Protelica Inc., and as the chief executive officer of Oliphenol, through which he takes key scientific discoveries regarding olive polyphenols, a natural class of active compounds present in the fruit of olives, and parlays them into commercial products. Throughout the course of his career, and through his multiple businesses, Dr. Crea has filed roughly 50 U.S. patents.
In light of his professional expertise, Dr. Crea earned a Special Achievement in Biotechnology, Medicine and Science through the National Association of American Italians, the Rumbough Award from the American Juvenile Diabetes Association and the Ottorino Rossi Award, which is an international award bestowed to those who work in the area of neurodegenerative diseases. While his career has been filled with highlights, he is most proud to have contributed to the production of human insulin during the late-1970s and to have been the sole author of the first two patents granted to Genentech.
