Mr. Zalkind earned a Bachelor of Science from Boston College in 1960. He furthered his education with a Juris Doctor from the Boston University School of Law in 1963. Initially intending to become a business professional, Mr. Zalkind shifted his attention to law and co-founded Zalkind Duncan and Bernstein LLP in 1965, specializing in criminal defense and civil litigation, including employment cases, personal injury, students' rights and other academic cases and domestic relations.
Mr. Zalkind has been a prolific and successful criminal defense attorney who has tried over 130 cases before a jury, spanning a wide range of offenses such as murder/death penalty cases, drug crimes, terrorism, extortion, bank robbery, sex crimes, tax evasion, arson, telemarketing fraud and Medicaid and securities fraud. Notably, the majority of his clients have been found not guilty or received substantially reduced sentences. Moreover, many of his clients have had excellent results in plea negotiations.
In addition to his criminal defense work, Mr. Zalkind has defended students and faculty accused of misconduct on campus, including plagiarism, cheating and sexual assault. In addition, he has represented plaintiffs and defendants in tort, discrimination, libel, divorce and business litigation cases, including securities litigation, winning favorable multimillion-dollar verdicts and settlements in litigation.
Mr. Zalkind has accrued many honors during his over 50-year career that include the Champion of Liberty Award from the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers in 1989 and a citation from the Best Lawyers in America for criminal defense annually since 1993 to the present. He was likewise recognized with an AV Preeminent Rating by Martindale-Hubbell. Celebrated among Super Lawyers since 2004, Mr. Zalkind was presented with the Balliro Award from the Massachusetts Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers in 2013.
Mr. Zalkind is affiliated with the Boston Bar Association, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and Massachusetts Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
