Mr. Vela was inspired by the legacy of his father, Dr. J. Julio Vela, who passed away when he was very young. Mr. Vela strived to make his father proud in his own career, earning a bachelor's degree in management from the University of Texas at Austin—McCombs School of Business and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from South Texas College of Law Houston. After law school, Mr. Vela began his career working alongside several experienced and well-respected criminal defense practitioners, namely Robert A. Morrow, Thomas B. Dupont II, and—most gratifyingly—J. Julio Vela Jr., Mr. Vela's elder brother and greatest inspiration.
Thanks in large part to the aforesaid individuals, Mr. Vela was given an opportunity to work on some of the most serious cases in Harris County, Texas, the largest county in the state. Mr. Vela's young career has provided the occasion to work on several capital murder cases and numerous other cases involving serious felony offenses. Mr. Vela has amassed significant trial experience alongside his brothers, involving himself in more than thirty criminal trials to verdict over his time in law school and first year practicing law.
Today, Mr. Vela is an attorney and managing partner at Jonathan J. Vela Esq., PLLC, through which he manages a wide variety of cases in counties across the State of Texas. Mr. Vela takes great pride in working with his brothers, J. Julio Vela Jr. and Jacob Julio Vela, who have each been integral to his early success and desire to practice law at the highest level. He also often collaborates with experienced legal practitioners, mostly Thomas B. Dupont II and Robert A. Morrow, who have each played critical roles in developing Mr. Vela's knowledge of criminal defense practice.
Mr. Vela attributes his early professional success to the support of his family and others in the legal community, who provided him with a solid foundation and early opportunities to work on meaningful cases. Particularly, he believes that much of his success is shared with his brothers, J. Julio Vela and Jacob Julio Vela, who are both attorneys as well.
