For over 50 years, Dr. Fossum has established himself as a staple within the community at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He began his career as an instructor from 1964 to 1966, at which time he was promoted to the role of assistant professor until 1968. He subsequently accepted the position of an associate professor until he was promoted once again as a full professor in 1972. He has inspired countless generations of students for nearly 40 years thereafter, ultimately gaining recognition as professor emeritus in 2008. In addition to his professional career, he has contributed his expertise within academia as a lecturer at international institutions such as Aarhus University in Denmark, Copenhagen University, the University of Paris and the University of Oslo.
Dr. Fossum was inspired to pursue a career in mathematics by his mother, who worked as a junior high school mathematics teacher. His father was the manager of the bookstore and his father's brother was the head of the physics department at Saint Olaf College. In light of his natural mathematical abilities, he began college one year early after completing 11th grade. He initially obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Saint Olaf College in 1959. Thereafter, he earned a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Michigan in 1961 and 1965, respectively.
For his contributions to the field, Dr. Fossum is honored to have been a recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award from Northfield High School and the Alumni Achievement Award from Saint Olaf College. Additionally, he is renowned as a Fulbright Fellow by the University of Oslo. Additionally, he is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a fellow of the national science section of Det Kongelig Norske Videnskabers Selskab and a fellow and past secretary of the American Mathematical Society. He is also recognized as a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, a member of the advisory committee of the Norwegian America Genealogy Center Naeseth Library, and a life member of the Association for Computing Machinery.
