Ms. Olmsted is a visual artist and fine art photographer who also spent years in academia teaching as an associate professor at the San Francisco Art Institute. A professor emeritus since 2011, she taught on campus in the departments of printmaking, photography, inter-media and foundations for 15 years. She notably taught all levels of lithography, intaglio, silkscreen, wood cut and off-set during her tenure. Additionally, Ms. Olmsted served as a faculty student reviewer, where she was required to travel frequently to interview prospective students, and chaired the print department.
Prior to her tenure at the Institute, Ms. Olmsted taught photography courses and supervised teaching assistants at her alma mater, the University of California Santa Cruz, between 1996 and 1999. She also maintained appointments at the University of Nevada in Reno as an assistant professor, teaching gallery management and drawing courses, and serving as director of the Sheppard Gallery of Art from 1994 to 1995. Additionally, she spent four years at Eastern Montana College in Billings as an adjunct faculty in photography and curriculum developer from 1983 to 1987. Apart from her years in academia, Ms. Olmsted garnered a reputation in the field, showcasing her talents as a photo editor for The Current in Phoenix, as an artist-in-residence for the City of Tempe, Arizona, and as the executive director for Artlink in Phoenix.
An expert in traditional print and photographic art, Ms. Olmsted is also well-versed in digital, analog and mixed media photography. Her large portfolio of artwork has been included in one-woman shows and group exhibitions throughout the country at such locations as the Northcutt Steele Gallery at Montana State University and the Szabo Fine Arts Gallery in Phoenix. Her photographs have also been included in numerous publications, including Northern Lights, New Times and Quantum Metaphysics. In retirement, Ms. Olmsted has been concentrating more on non-toxic methods of etching and silk screening.
Ms. Olmsted was born in Palo Alto, California. She began drawing at the age of 7 and became particularly interested in visual art. After high school, she studied locally, becoming an alumnus of the University of California Santa Cruz, where she received Bachelor of Arts in art, design and printmaking in 1979. She soon after achieved a Master of Fine Arts in art at Southern Illinois University in 1982.
Ms. Olmsted received an ongoing grant from the San Francisco Art Institute between 2005 and 2011 and a fellowship from the Artists' Fellowship, Inc., in New York City in 2005. She was recognized with a Best Production Award from the Theatre Critics Circle in 1998. She also received an Eben Demarest Award from the Eben Demarest Trust in Pittsburgh in 1987 and was named to Outstanding Young Women of America in 1984. A celebrated Marquis listee, Ms. Olmsted has been cited in the 25th and 26th editions of Who's Who in the West and the 19th and 25th editions of Who's Who of American Women.
