Dr. Jencks is a celebrated sociologist and professor emeritus in the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, where he dedicated more than three decades to teaching and research. An alumnus of Harvard University himself, he completed a Bachelor of Arts in 1958 and a Master of Education the following year before pursuing postgraduate coursework at the London School of Economics. After graduation, Dr. Jencks considered a career in journalism, briefly bringing him to the New Republic as an associate editor before he was bestowed with a five-year fellowship at the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington.
In 1967, Dr. Jencks served as a member of the faculty at Harvard University, where he rose to become a full professor in 1973. During this time, he continued his education, earning a Doctor of Laws from Kalamazoo College in 1969, and was awarded with a Doctor of Letters from Columbia College in recognition of his contributions to the field. He left Harvard in 1980 after being named as the John D. MacArthur Professor of Sociology and Urban Affairs at Northwestern University, where he would remain until 1996, additionally spending the 1994 to 1995 academic year as a visiting professor at the University of Chicago. In 1998, Dr. Jencks returned to Harvard as the Malcolm Wiener Professor of Social Policy, a title he held until earning the distinguished title of a professor emeritus in 2018.
Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Jencks has been honored with more than half a dozen prestigious academic and cultural fellowships, including becoming a three-time fellow of the Russell Sage Foundation, a two-time Guggenheim Fellow and a two-time fellow of the Center for Advanced Study in Behavioral Science. He has contributed extensively to academic studies and journals, and is the author of several seminal sociological texts, including "The Black-White Test Score Gap," "The Homeless" and "Rethinking Social Policy." Dr. Jencks remains affiliated with the National Academy of Sciences and the American Philosophical Society, and enjoys sailing, swimming and nature near his home on Cape Cod.
