After obtaining a Bachelor of Science in elementary education from Barber-Scotia College in 1957, Ms. Harris earned a master's degree in education from Furman University in 1983. She subsequently flourished as an elementary school teacher for nearly 40 years. Following her retirement from education, she continued to thrive as a board member for St. Joseph's High School, the Greenville County Museum of Art and Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center, which appointed her as the board chairperson in 2009. In recognition of Ms. Harris's tremendous portfolio of volunteer work, as well as her involvement in various Catholic organizations, the Bon Secours St. Francis Cancer Center named the Pearlie Harris Center for Breast Health in 2007.
In 2018, the Zeta Phi Beta sorority honored Ms. Harris with their annual Community Service Award. The following year, she received the MLK Citizenship Award from the Gamma Gamma Lambda chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. Ms. Harris had previously been selected as Woman of the Year by the women's club of St. Mary's Catholic Church in 2009, additionally finding success as the chair of the American Heart Association's "Go Red" campaign.

She also continues to serve as a eucharistic minister for St. Mary's Catholic Church and as a volunteer for The Monastery of St. Clare. Ms. Harris attributes her success to her independent lifestyle, which consistently gave her the confidence to pursue any opportunity that piqued her interest.
