Well regarded in his field, Dr. Johnson is an economics advisor at Trade Engine LLC. He was a senior expert in finance and governance for the United States Department of Defense (DoD) in Afghanistan from 2009 to 2014. He was team leader and senior economist for Military Professional Recruiting Inc., a DoD contractor in Iraq during 2008-2009. He was a senior economist for the US State Department in Iraq prior to that, and an independent contractor for various organizations in Iraq going back to 2003. He also worked as a contractor and economics advisor for USAID, the US Treasury Department, the British Department for International Development and the Asian Development Bank, in locations including Saudi Arabia, the former Yugoslavia, Kyrgyzstan, and Israel-Palestine. He taught financial or international economics at the University of Maryland in Saudi Arabia, the American University in Kyrgyzstan, and Boston University.
Johnson completed a Doctor of Philosophy in diplomatic and economic history at Yale University in 1994. He worked on his dissertation with Robert Mundell, a subsequent Nobel Prize winner, and Willem Buiter. He previously earned a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from the University of Massachusetts (Amherst), and a Master of Business Administration in finance at the University of California at Los Angeles. He is fluent in several languages. During 1981-1987, he worked at Chase Manhattan Bank where he was promoted to second vice president, and as a vice president at Citibank.
In 2018, Johnson was a Democratic candidate for the Massachusetts State House; he acknowledges campaign mistakes, but believes the race could otherwise have been winnable. Beyond his affiliation with Trade Engine LLC, he has since worked as a tennis coach for the Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion charter school and for Westfield High School, and for the 2020 US Census. Dr. Johnson has written on monetary and development economics, and on topics in international affairs, in the Journal of Economics and Political Economy, the Small Wars Journal, the Journal of Social and Administrative Sciences, and Advances in Social Sciences Research Journal, among others. He received an award from the Association of American Publishers for his Gold, France, and the Great Depression, 1919-1932 (Yale, 1997). He is currently revising past papers for inclusion in a book on contemporary affairs.
Johnson's daughter, Elizabeth Loss Johnson, PhD, recently joined the faculty of Feinberg Medical School in Chicago. Dr. Johnson intends that his most productive days are ahead. He is looking for opportunities to work in international affairs with the US Government, or perhaps with a graduate school of public and international affairs.
