James R. Cohen started his career path with the intention of becoming an actor. While studying history and drama at Ithaca College, he was inspired by his father, Daniel Cohen, who was a prominent lawyer in Staten Island. His father cleverly persuaded him to become a trial lawyer, so that he could actually utilize his knowledge and skills in the courtroom. Earning a Bachelor of Arts from Ithaca College in 1972, he went on to receive a JD from Syracuse University College of Law in 1976, where he was President of his Senior Class and also received the Trial Practice award. He was admitted to the New York State Bar in February 1975 and, thereafter, was admitted to practice before the U. S. District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York in 1977. Impressively, Mr. Cohen commenced his collegiate studies at the age of 16 and received his admission to law school at 19 years old.
Upon receiving his law degree in 1975, Mr. Cohen began his professional path as an associate with the law firm of Davis, Decker & Davis in New York City. He held that position until 1978. In 1978 he was hired by the Departmental Disciplinary Committee for the First Judicial Department, in New York City, as an Assistant Counsel. Between 1981 and 1985 he served as that agency's First Deputy Chief Counsel. Since leaving the Disciplinary Committee in 1985, he has been a partner in Simonson & Cohen, LLP in Staten Island, where he has focused his efforts on trial law, real estate and Surrogate's Court practice.
Maintaining affiliation with the Association of Trial Lawyers of America and the Richmond County Bar Association, Mr. Cohen sat on the board of directors of the New York State Trial Lawyers Association from 1995 until 2001. Likewise, he has previously served as board member, treasurer, secretary, vice president and president of the Staten Island Trial Lawyers Association. Engaged in his local community, he has served as a member of the board of directors and as vice president of United Activities Unlimited, as a founding and current member of the board of trustees of the Have-A-Heart Foundation, as past president and current member of the board of directors of his local Rotary Club and as past and current District Counsel to Rotary International, District 7230, which includes Westchester, the Bronx, Manhattan, Staten Island and Bermuda.
