Well regarded as the owner and managing director of IDP Patent Services in San Diego, Mr. Underdal is an experienced patent practitioner who works closely with clients by preparing patent applications, filing, drafting and prosecuting U.S. and international patent applications. Having established his company in 2013, he provides services to firms of all sizes, as well as investors and individuals throughout the U.S. Moreover, IDP Patent Services serves international clients pursuing patent protection.
Born in Denmark, Mr. Underdal relocated to the U.S. in 2000 after an eight-year commitment as a consultant and manager for Accenture in Copenhagen. At his initial appointment in the U.S., with LogicTree Corporation in College Park, Maryland, he presided as the vice president of a team of 45 individuals within the software engineering department, which was responsible for developing the company's multi-modal voice access technology. Following this period, Mr. Underdal earned leading roles as the executive vice president of business development for BTS Logic Corporation and as the director of engineering and leader of OE special products for SPX Corporation in Kalamazoo, Michigan. In 2009, he was acquired by Mitchell International in San Diego, where he initially worked as the senior director of product delivery for a year and then as the vice president of product delivery until 2012.
As a seasoned researcher, Mr. Underdal has been awarded 15 U.S. patents, and as a patent practitioner he has received more than 130 patents for his clients. During his successful career, Mr. Underdal was credited with co-developing an entire framework of automotive diagnostic technologies, called adaptive diagnostic framework, which has since produced numerous patents as well.
Long driven to contribute to the local community, Mr. Underdal spent three years as a science Olympiad coach at Del Norte High School in San Diego between 2011 and 2014. During this time, he specialized in Fermi questions, which is specific to order-of-magnitude estimation in physics and engineering, and Disease detectives, which relates to epidemiology.
Mr. Underdal earned a Doctor of Jurisprudence at Northwestern California University in 2019 and, after passing the California Bar Examination in 2020, was admitted to the California State Bar as a licensed attorney in August 2021. He also holds a Master of Science in software engineering from the Technical University of Denmark and a Master of Science in computer science from Manchester University in England. Aligning himself with the National Association of Patent Practitioners, Mr. Underdal has greatly benefited as a professional member of the organization. He is also a member of the American Bar Association, the California Lawyers Association, and the Orange County Bar Association.
