David Temko Pivoted from Art to Finance in His Professional Endeavors

Mr. Temko gravitated toward his eventual industry because he grew up as an artist, but realized early on that he wouldn't have a lot of opportunities or acumen with an artist degree. Greatly inspired by his father, Ronald Temko, he decided to retain art as a hobby but pursue a business degree upon graduating from high school. While a student at California State University, Chico, he developed an interest in the ability to finance people's dreams; fueled by his natural skills as a people-person, he strived to give back and help people reach their goals, no matter what they were. Upon earning a Bachelor of Science in business administration and entrepreneurship in 2007, Mr. Temko set out on his professional path.

Mr. Temko first found success as a commercial real estate and capital lending broker with Marcus & Millichap, a Calabasas, California-based firm, from 2010 to 2011. Following this appointment, he became a commercial loan officer at Wells Fargo for five years, between 2011 and 2016, before being appointed as senior vice president of Voit Real Estate services from 2016 to 2017. Having accrued a deep knowledge of the mortgage industry—having observed firsthand how those within it put loans together to satisfy borrowers' needs and execute on their promises—he saw what it took to be a successful loan officer and what was required from a brokerage firm to provide the best services. In addition, he also saw where companies were lacking and ways in which they could improve their business practices. When he eventually sought to start his own company, he wanted to make sure and execute all those needs and create better efficiencies—and ultimately build relationships through the industry that provided the best pricing. Since 2018, he has done exactly that in his role as president and managing director of C2 Financial Corporation, a brokerage headquartered in San Diego.

Through the company, which he treats as a family-run organization, Mr. Temko has aimed to identify key opportunities to create greater efficiency, and, looking toward the future, hopes to expand and grow it into the biggest and best mortgage broker in the nation. Under his leadership, the business has already been recognized on a national level, having been ranked the #1 mortgage broker in the United States by the Association of Independent Mortgage Experts in both 2019 and 2020. He was also individually honored as a "Top Mortgage Executive." But beyond the accolades, he wants to continue to create a better, bigger, and stronger environment for his loan officers and raise more awareness among their borrowers to seek help from those officers. Speaking to future professionals, he advised, "People want to feel appreciated…they are human, so you have to let people know that you care. In other words, it is more than just about making money."

A natural humanitarian, Mr. Temko attributes his success to being able to find connections with people on both personal and business levels. Additionally, he has traveled around the world and developed friendships with those from vastly different cultures and backgrounds. As someone who enjoys being outside of his comfort zone and making others feel good, what he loves most in life is walking into a room and leaving it with a new friend.
