Dr. Rainey is a Professor Emeritus of family ecology and home economics, as well as the director of the School for Family and Consumer Science at the University of Akron. A faculty member since 1980, her tenure has notably included heading the school and successfully achieving accreditation for three professional programs. Likewise, Dr. Rainy has played an instrumental role in increasing charitable donations on behalf of the school itself.
Dr. Rainey served as the director of bilingual education at the University of Guam for two years. She subsequently served as the first director of the Non Formal Education Center at Michigan State University from 1974 to 1976 and as the founding director of the Family Study Center at Oklahoma State University between 1976 and 1978. Dr. Rainey also spent time in the field as a program associate on behalf of the Asia Society in New York City in 1971, as the director of the Center for Family with the American Home Economics Association and as the senior research associate for Creative Associates Inc. Additionally, she authored chapters in books, conference proceedings and government reports.
Born in Wilmette, Illinois, Dr. Rainey grew up in a Catholic community that believed in service. She became active with the Young Christian Students, where she learned various life skills that she was later able to utilize in life. Dr. Rainey earned a Bachelor of Arts in Humanistic Studies from St. Mary's College, Notre Dame, and following graduation joined the Peace Corps in the Philippines before attending Michigan State University, where she earned a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative and International Education in 1967 and 1971, respectively.
Supporting her professional endeavors, Dr. Rainey has been involved as a member of several pertinent organizations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Home Economics Association, the Comparative and International Education Society, the Gerontological Society of America and the National Council on Family Relations. She is also an elected fellow of the American Council of Education and a member of Kappa Omicron Phi. Recognizing her volunteer accomplishments, Dr. Rainey was honored with a Disaster Preparedness Award from the southeast region of the American Red Cross in 2007. She was also the recipient of the annual Humanitas Award in 2013 from the Alumnae Association of Saint Mary's College, which recognizes alumnae for their leadership and dedication to the well being of others.
