Celebrating a storied career as a production designer, Mr. Wurtzel has contributed his expertise to a multitude of blockbuster and award-winning films, television shows and features over the course of his 50-year tenure. Designing for the Mirisch Agency, he is part of a larger network of producers, designers, editors and artists in motion pictures, television and commercials. Mr. Wurtzel is proud to have worked on such features as "Hannah and Her Sisters," "Empire Falls," "Angels in America," "Enchanted," "The Purple Rose of Cairo," and "Hair." Moreover, he is gratified to have collaborated with various directors and artists, including Woody Allen, Mike Nichols, Chris Columbus and Meryl Streep.
With a lifelong passion for theatre, Mr. Wurtzel enjoyed both performing on stage and designing productions from an early age. Determined to make a name for himself within the live theatre industry, he obtained a Bachelor of Fine Arts, as well as a Master of Fine Arts in stage design and theatrical design from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1962 and 1964, respectively. Thereafter, Mr. Wurtzel established himself in the film industry in 1975, at which time he contributed his designs to the film "Hester Street." Though he did not initially expect to become involved in the film industry, he eagerly applied his theatrical expertise from stage to screen.
Supplementing his professional career, Mr. Wurtzel has served as a lecturer in production design at New York University. For his contributions in the field, he is honored to have been a recipient of the Art Directors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020. In accounting for his standout success, Mr. Wurtzel credits his passion for theatre and the quality of his work.
