After completing two years of college coursework, a five-year apprenticeship in the optical sciences through Gates, Stockler & Lenz Optical & Hearing Aid Center, and five years of additional study in practice, Mr. Shangle became an optician and excelled in the field for many years before his retirement.
Throughout the course of his career, Mr. Shangle developed an expertise in fitting those with deformities, either from birth or as the result of an accident, with glasses they loved. Additionally, he invented the "slam dunk fit," which is a method of perfectly fitting pairs of glasses. Moreover, throughout the course of his career, he furthered his talents by becoming a licensed dispensing optician and a licensed hearing aid fitter.
Prior to his retirement from the field, Mr. Shangle retained his affiliation with such professional organizations as the Kentucky Optical Society and the Society of Dispensing Opticians of Kentucky. In a career suffused with highlights, he is most proud that his clients constantly returned to him because of his dedication and spectacular customer service. Looking toward the future, Mr. Shangle intends to enjoy his well-deserved retirement.
