Ms. McElwee notably earned a PhD in natural sciences, as well as degrees in naturopathy and homeopathy after achieving a degree in nursing. Raised in a family that advocated for natural foods, she became a nurse in the 1960s. Eventually, Ms. McElwee gravitated toward holistic treatments for illness that takes into account the complex relationship between mind and body.
In 1985, Ms. McElwee established Health By Choice Inc., a natural health and wellness center with locations in New Enterprise and Manheim. The full service chiropractic center features certified clinical health practitioners and naturopathic and homeopathic doctors on staff while offering wellness treatments that include thermography, hair analysis, stress assessment, body mass analysis, acoustic cardiograph, iridology, enzyme profile, reflexology and massages. Health By Choice's mission is to customize programs to help clients achieve wellness goals, providing nutritional counseling and naturopathic medicine to heal the mind, body and spirit. Additionally, Ms. McElwee founded Health By Choice Education and Research Inc., a nonprofit promoting education and research and to empower health professionals to promote health and wellness through a comprehensive and natural approach to healing.
Ms. McElwee has accrued many honors during her professional career, including recognition as the Woman of the Year by Business and Professional Women of Pennsylvania in 2019. She was also presented with the Athena National Leadership Award from the Bedford County Chamber of Commerce in the same year. Ms. McElwee is additionally active as a chapter leader of the Weston A. Price Foundation and a study group leader of the National Center for Homeopathy. She is also District Director for PA Business and Professional Women District 5 (www.bpwpa.org).
