BELLEVILLE, IL, September 29, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Juanakee C. Sykes has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Mrs. Sykes earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Washington University in St. Louis. She was inspired to enter the medical field by her father, and prospered as a nurse for 12 years before turning her attention to the building and construction industry after meeting her husband. Together, they established 90 Degree Construction LLC.
Mrs. Sykes prospered as a commercial and residential carpenter for 10 years before founding Black Girls Build Inc. (BGB). Reflecting on the gender bias towards men in the construction and carpentry fields, she was inspired to expand on her experience in the building industry by creating a venue where she could teach fundamental construction skills to women and girls. BGB specializes in teaching the best practices in carpentry, floor laying, paint, plumbing and heating, ventilation and air conditioning.
Among her career accomplishments, Mrs. Sykes was recognized by "Construction Dive" in March 2021 as a Female Leader in Construction. Out of the 800 women who were nominated, only 59 were chosen nationwide. In addition, Mrs. Sykes has earned a Black Female Leader in Construction Award. She published a memoir, "My A.R.R.A: Growing Into Me," which was a C.I.P.A EVVY Award winner and a multi award winner of a beginning readers children's book called "Bugging a Bug."
