SACRAMENTO, CA, September 29, 2021 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Susan Lytle Gilmore, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Having accrued more than 50 years of professional expertise in adult and special education, Dr. Gilmore commenced her career at Louisiana State University (LSU) as an assistant professor in 1968. Simultaneously, she served as a part-time speech-language pathologist at the Mohican School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1969, where she remained active until 1973. By 1974, Dr. Gilmore was promoted to a professor and coordinator of the Speech & Hearing Clinic at LSU.
During the 1980s, Dr. Gilmore brought her expertise to California, where she served as a part-time lecturer and clinic supervisor at the University of the Pacific in 1979, as well as a part-time lecturer at the University of California Extension Davis in 1981. At this time, she joined the Sacramento Unified School District, for which she served in numerous roles, including the supervisor of designated instruction and services for special education, the supervisor of special education, and administrative specialist for special education between 1979 and 1992.
Consistently growing in her professional endeavors, Dr. Gilmore was appointed as the principal of the A. Warren McClaskey Adult Center in 1992 and again in 2000, and later worked as the principal of the Fremont School for Adults in 1998. Likewise, she has been the interim assistant superintendent of adult education for the Sacramento Unified School District for one year. After spending one decade as the principal at the A. Warren McClaskey Adult Center, Dr. Gilmore became the director of adult education and administrator in 2010, as well as for the Charles A. Jones Career and Education Center.
Prior to commencing her professional endeavors, Dr. Gilmore earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1964 and a Master of Arts in 1965, both in speech language pathology at the University of the Pacific. In 1968, she attained a Doctor of Philosophy in speech language pathology from Ohio University and, later, an administrative credential at the California State University, Sacramento, in 1980.
Finding great success throughout the course of her career, Dr. Gilmore has been honored with numerous accolades, including the Donald A. McCune Collaborative Award in 2019, the George C. Mann Distinguished Service Award in 2014, the Robert W. Rupert Award in 2005 and the Camille Wickland Meritorious Service Award in 2004 from the California Council for Adult Education. Other accolades to her credit include the 2008 Superintendent's Personal Excellence Award from the Sacramento City Unified School District, the 1999 Outstanding Administrator Award from the Sacramento Association for the Retarded and the 1985 Outstanding Achievement Award from the California Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Additionally, Dr. Gilmore has been recognized as an Outstanding Adult Education Administrator by the California Adult Education Administrators Association and Association of California School Administrators on numerous occasions.
To remain aware of developments in her field, Dr. Gilmore currently maintains her affiliation with the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the Association of California School Administrators, the California Council for Adult Education, the California Adult Education Administrators Association and the California Speech-Language-Hearing Association, among others. With these organizations, she has held a plethora of executive positions, such as the president of the California Council for Adult Education, the Council of School Supervisors, the Coordinators and Administrators of Language, Speech and Hearing Services and the Council of University Supervisors of Practicum in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.
In accounting for her success, Ms. Gilmore credits the work ethic instilled by her parents. Among her career accomplishments, she is most proud to have transferred the adult education program from a warehouse program to a program of excellence in the state of California. She is also gratified to have discharged a number of teachers and hired qualified staff, as well as rewriting the adult curriculum to offer the best possible quality of education. Looking toward the future, Dr. Gilmore hopes to soon retire.
