Dr. Achenbaum has also gained valuable professional experience as the associate vice president of academic affairs at Carnegie Mellon University from 1984 to 1987 before becoming appointed as the deputy director at the Institute of Gerontology at the University of Michigan from 1989 to 1999.
From 1999 to 2002, Dr. Achenbaum held the position of the dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Houston. From 2013 to 2017, he was recruited as the deputy director at the University of Texas Consortium on Aging at Texas Medical Center. Dr. Achenbaum additionally operated as a faculty member at the Institute of Aging Oxford University and the McGovern Center of Ethics and Human Spirit and the Institute of Spirituality and Health.
A fellow of the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education and the Gerontological Society of America, Dr. Achenbaum served as secretary of the latter academic organization. He is also associated with Phi Beta Kappa, the National Council on Aging, the Houston Philosophical Society and the National Academy of Social Insurance. Dr. Achenbaum notably participated on the editorial board for the American Society on Aging.
Dr. Achenbaum has been part of many charitable and civic endeavors, including as a member of the gerontology council for the World Economic Forum and a board member for the Albert Schweitzer Foundation. Furthermore, he has contributed to the Interfaith Care Partners, the Alzheimer's Association, the Institute of Interfaith Dialog and the Center Christ Church Cathedral. Dr. Achenbaum refined his skills as the policy chairman for the Gerontological Society of America from 2001 to 2007, a board chairman for the Leadership Council at the National Council on Aging from 1993 to 2011 and an academic for the Holocaust Museum from 2001 to 2007.
Dr. Achenbaum has penned several creative works over the years, including writings on aging and spirituality for GeroPsych. He likewise edited a public policy and aging e-newsletter from 2006 to 2013. Dr. Achenbaum has also been published in "Robert N. Butler MD: Visionary of Healthy Aging" in 2013, "Social Security" in 1986 and "Old Age in the New Land" in 1978.
Dr. Achenbaum has received many accolades throughout his career, including as Outstanding Educator of the Year in 1992 and Gerontological Professional of the Year in 2006. He also accepted the Kent Award from the Gerontological Society of America in 2007, which he considers as his professional highlight. He was recognized in the Outstanding Faculty at the University of Houston in 2009. Looking toward the future, Dr. Achenbaum intends to work as long as he lives.
