The founder and president of The Portwood Institute for Art and Healing, and Alixandra Summitt Consultants, Inc. and, Summitry Productions Dr. Summitt established her incredible facility in Okemos, Michigan, in 2000. Promoting health through the arts and fitness, the Institute offers several classes in drawing, sculpture and painting, as well as Raja Yoga, and offers well-being treatments including far infrared sauna, Ceragem massage bed, and various forms of Energy Healing. Dr. Summitt is also a continuing instructor at Lansing Community College (LCC) since 1981, where she has been teaching Beginning Yoga for over 30 years. She formerly taught numerous other courses on campus, including Intro to Psychology, and Intro to Education, as well as proposing and teaching courses in Higher Adult Development, Yoga and Creativity, and The Theory and Practice of Yoga and Intermediate Yoga. Additionally Dr. Summitt recently began serving as a minister of spiritual peacemaking for The Beloved Community, and as Chair for The Energy Medicine Research Institute (EMRI) Visual and Performing Arts Department. In 2019 she became an Introduction Leader for The Landmark Forum.
Dr. Summitt's years in academia have included former appointments in the college of osteopathic medicine (COM) at Michigan State University (MSU) supervising the media center, and creating medical illustrations for doctors' publications and treatment manuals. Her innovative illustrations of the gait process, a series six drawings, was published in the AMA Journal. To boot, Dr. Summitt designed the posters which led to the passing of the child safety seat law in Michigan and was employed as a graphic illustrator in the agriculture and natural resources department. She also worked in community services at Northwest Michigan College and was a beloved art director for Bath Consolidated Schools early in her career during the late 1960's. Outside of teaching, she offered her expertise as an art consultant.
As an artist, Dr. Summitt's portfolio has been featured in several one-woman shows, including at Northwestern Michigan College, the Belen Art Gallery at the Michigan Women's Hall of Fame and Historical Center, Wind Rider Gallery in Michigan, as well as in numerous group shows with Working Women Artists and most recently, The Women's Caucus on Art at the Swords Into Plowshares Gallery in Detroit. Some of her paintings and sculptures have also been commissioned in Michigan for numerous public and private collections throughout the Midwest.
In 2019, Dr. Summitt was selected as a featured artist at Abrams Planetarium Black Light Theatre at MSU. That same year, she partnered with MSU's Eli and Edith Broad Art Museum in East Lansing to serve as a visiting artist at the Pleasant View art magnet school.
In a staged performance and exhibit, Dr. Summitt presented, Women Who Broke the Glass Ceiling, painted on glass at the Robin Theatre, to alert her community to the 47 women who had run for the U.S. Presidency, continuing the theme woven throughout her career of women's empowerment.
Dr. Summitt studied at MSU, where she received a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Fine Art with minors in Arts and Crafts and Aesthetics in 1965, a Master of Arts in Educational Systems Development in 1981 and, a Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Adult and Lifelong Education in 1990. She is certified as a Life Coach and Healing Codes Practitioner. She was licensed to teach art in K-12 and is an ordained minister of spiritual peacemaking through the sanctuary of the beloved.
Dr. Summitt is a former charter member of the National Museum of Women in the Arts and designer of the medallion presented to the former Michigan Women's Hall of Fame and Historical Center inductees for over 20 years.
Honored with several Design and Sculpture Awards, Dr. Summitt was nominated Teacher of the Year by Phi Delta Kappa in 1993 and was named Artist of the Year by the Energy Medicine Research Institute in 2019. She was also awarded an LCC Faculty Development Grant, for a project in which her students shared yoga with to nursing home residents. As the head of EMRI Department of Visual and Performing Arts, she is designing and delivering curriculum to certify health professionals and others in research on Energy Medicine, and is a board member of Art in the Wild, placing art to draw public attention to the preservation and restoration of the natural environment. A celebrated Marquis listee, Dr. Summitt has been cited in the 20th and 26th editions of Who's Who of American Women.
